Reddit

Social

Serves from its own edge and leans on 429 with Retry-After, making it one of the more conventional and better-behaved responders.

Reddit runs its own edge, identifiable by the server: snooserv header, and handles automated traffic mainly through rate limiting rather than through fingerprint blocking. Responses carry a retry-after header.

Reddit also operates a documented API with published rate limits and an authentication path, which makes it one of the few large social platforms where the sanctioned route is genuinely practical. Where a supported API exists, using it removes the entire class of problem this glossary describes.

What is in front of it

  • In-house edge, identified by server: snooserv.
  • Rate limiting and account-level controls rather than a third-party bot management product on public content paths.

Status codes

429 Rate limited

Rate limited. Observed behaviour.

Request rate exceeded for the client or token.

What triggers it

  • Exceeding the published API rate limit.
  • Unauthenticated requests, which are held to lower limits than authenticated ones.

How to confirm it

  • server: snooserv, with a retry-after header.

What to do about it

  • Honour Retry-After. Reddit publishes its limits and returns headers describing remaining budget, so pacing can be driven by real numbers rather than guesswork.
  • Authenticate. Registered API clients get materially better limits than anonymous callers.

403 Forbidden

Blocked. Observed behaviour.

Access refused, typically for authentication, permission, or subreddit-level reasons rather than bot classification.

What triggers it

  • Requesting private or quarantined content.
  • A missing or expired token on an authenticated endpoint.

How to confirm it

  • server: snooserv with a JSON error body on API paths.

What to do about it

  • Read the body. Reddit's API returns structured errors that usually name the actual reason, which is unusual and worth taking advantage of.

Notes

  • Reddit's terms govern automated access and commercial use of its data, and the API requires registration.
